Yassified older sister Isabela (Diane Guerrero) makes flowers and hearts bloom, middle sister Luisa (Jessica Darrow) possesses super-strength, and teenage cousin Camilo (Rhenzy Feliz) is a shapeshifter who hasn't decided upon his final form – a nice enough metaphor for fluid identity, and also a great vehicle for a string of animation sight gags.Įveryone in the family has a gift – everyone, that is, except Mirabel. Mirabel's mum, Julieta (Angie Cepeda), can heal with her tasty cooking aunt Pepa (Carolina Gaitán), trailed by a comical raincloud, can control the weather. "I think the best family entertainment gives families an entirely new vocabulary to talk about after the movie," Miranda told ABC News Breakfast. In a breathless all-cast overture, we meet our hero, Abuela's granddaughter Mirabel (Stephanie Beatriz, In the Heights Brooklyn Nine-Nine), a bespectacled teenage empath who introduces the many marvellous members of her extended family – three generations who each have their special gifts that help them watch over the local community. The sprawling family house, known as Casita, is a personality unto itself: helping out with the chores, providing emotional support, and laying down the rhythm tracks for the film's musical sequences – like some extremely benign version of the impish mansion in Nobuhiko Obayashi's cult horror, House (1977). Having lost her husband, the future Abuela Madrigal (voiced by María Cecilia Botero) flees into the Colombian mountains, where she's blessed with a magic candle and an enchanted village. This upbeat confection begins with a surprisingly dark prelude, in which a community of people are driven from their homeland by Spanish invaders – a tale of indigenous dispossession that anchors the ensuing whimsy. Stephanie Beatriz, who voices Mirabel, played Carla in the film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit musical In The Heights.
